The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the 9th Delhi Assembly Elections will take place on February 5, 2025, in a single phase across all 70 constituencies. The counting of votes is scheduled for February 8, 2025.

The announcement was made at a press conference on Tuesday, following which the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into immediate effect. The MCC governs the behavior of political parties and candidates, covering aspects such as meetings, processions, manifestos, and polling procedures, ensuring a level playing field during the elections.

Historical Context

The last Delhi Assembly Elections were held on February 8, 2020, in a single phase, with a voter turnout of 62.82%. This marked a decline of 4.65 percentage points compared to the 2015 elections.

The current term of the Delhi government ends on February 23, 2025. The newly elected government is expected to assume office shortly thereafter.

Key Political Contestants

The Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 will see a contest among three major political parties:

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): Currently in power with 62 of 70 Assembly seats.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): The main opposition party, holding eight seats.

Congress: Unsuccessful in securing any seats during the 2020 elections.

The AAP has declared its intention to contest all 70 seats. The BJP has announced 29 candidates so far, while Congress plans to field candidates for all seats without alliances and has named more than 26 candidates to date.
